As promised, I’m making available the outline from my lectures at San Jose State University, Cal State Hayward, and Santa Clara University:
It’s a mix of institutional history and conceptual history and is necessarily skimpy. I hope that it will suggest to others who are wiser, smarter, or have more time than I do a topic or two worth exploring further. (I give them out at my talks mainly so that the attendees don’t feel that they have to write anything down; the footnote on page 1 is a warning that I’ll be painting in fairly broad strokes.) I also include a short bibliography at the end. (Ok, it’s not all that short, but the best introductory works are listed in bold type.)
