“I want to make very clear that I am deeply committed to the rule of law.”

It’s going to be quite interesting to watch the confirmation hearings on Alberto Gonzales’s nomination to the post of Attorney General. It’s disturbing that we’ve gotten to the point where CNN has to headline a story this way:

Gonzales vows to abide by treaties

According to Article VI of the Constitution to which Gonzales “shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support,”

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

You know, Bush has done something I wouldn’t have thought possible-nominate someone for AG who could possibly be worse than Ashcroft.

I had the same sense about the departure of Janet Reno, one of the worst Attorneys General in American history. You can’t do worse than that, I thought. How wrong I was.

“After Gonzales was nominated in November, Biden called him “a pretty solid guy” who would be a big improvement over Ashcroft.”

Excuse me? I’m sorry but is improvement now defined by someone willing to acknowledge that there IS a fifth amendment somewhere in the Constitution?

I had the same reaction to this headline:

Gonzales Disavows Torture Tactics

It’s news that the AG-designate claims to be anti-torture. God help us.
