The New York Times (requires simple registration) has a good piece (“The Mystery of the Insurgency,” by James Bennett) on the nature and the motives of the terrorist campaign to create mass chaos and suffering in Iraq. The fact has become evident to all honest observers that the terrorists are waging war on the Iraqi people. They are not “the resistance,” but terrorists. Their game plan seems to be simply to create mass chaos, destruction, and suffering, in the hope that they can emerge as the meanest and most terrifying gang and impose their rule.
