A Dumb Rule for Singers, and a Mature Decision
by a Wise Family
The Texas Music Educators Assocation has denied a request by a young man to sing as a soprano, a role that the TMEA reserves for females. The young man, Mikhael Rawls, has protested, as has his family. That’s not all that surprising. Here’s what you almost never hear today, as reported by AP on CNN:
Michelle Rawls, Mikhael’s mother, said several attorneys have contacted her about filing a lawsuit against the association, but her family doesn’t want to take legal action.
“We just don’t think that would be the right thing to do,” she said.
It sounds like the Rawls family (well, this one, at least) has a vey mature attitude toward the role of the law, even in the face of what seems a rather stupid rule, one that undermines, rather than promotes, artistic achievement.
