There was a time when Cheney, as vice-President, would feel morally compelled to resign, announcing, “I told Scooter Libby that I had the President’s permission when I told him to leak secret classified information to the press for partisan purposes, but that was not true.”
In answer to Tom’s question — no, the President may not fire himself.
However, he does have the power to have himself incarcerated indefinitely without access to counsel. This would dovetail nicely with his avowed objective of defeating enemies of liberty, and the rest of us would be safer.
If Bush fired himself he’d be accused of acting unilaterally.

Thank God we no longer live in such times…
