I saw Al Jazeera English in Israel over holidays. (Apparently Israeli’s aren’t so weak-kneed that cable providers ban the channel there, but anyhoo…) It actually provided some of the best coverage of the Saddam Hussein hanging that I saw. Much better than Fox/CNN, better than Sky News (which is really just a British version of Fox/CNN) and better than France 24 (France’s new english language news channel.)
The analysts interviewed a variety of middle eastern experts, some pro hanging, some anti hanging, in extended segments, and asked fairly tough questions of both sides.
One of the interviewees had the temerity to suggest that the rush to hang was in part driven by an American wish not to dredge up its past relationship with Hussein in the trials about his other atrocities. Imagine hearing that on American TV!!!
I agree entirely. The joke wasn’t just on Al-Jazeera (or their staff), but on American news networks and on the American public. Part of the fun is that it pokes fun at everyone.
Too funny…and familiar.

I believe that was a main point of the parody. American news can be informative, but they all have an agenda driving their reporting.
