Summer’s Over in Kiev…

UkraineFlag.jpg

Well, I had a good meeting last night after my very delayed flight to Kiev. I hope that we can increase our work in Ukraine. (As with my last trip to Ukraine, minus my baggage. My United flight to Frankfurt was delayed, so I missed the Lufthansa connection, meaning I got put on a Ukrainian International Airlines flight that stopped in Lvov and then went on to Kiev. My bag probably will not catch up with me in time for my flight to Crimea, but I’ve been told that the delivery company can send it on to meet me there…if it is found.)

I’m working away on a variety of projects (including finishing touches on my lecture on Monday on the history of property and freedom and writing a chapter for an edited collection on moral philosophy), but I did get away to walk to Independence Square, a place on which the world’s attention was quite fixed in 2004. (In fact, I’m drinking Borjomi water and enjoying some sausages while overlooking the square.) The summer has definitely ended here, as it’s blustery and alternately sunny and warm and rainy and windy and chilly. (Actually, I like that kind of weather, and it’s a nice break from rather warm and humid weather in Malaysia [warm, but not nearly as hot and steamy as Washington can be] and the hot weather in Washington, D.C.) I’m off tomorrow to the Simferopol Airport, this time with just my carry on luggage. (I took a trip this morning to a shopping center to replace some of the stuff in my misplaced suitcase. I had to fumble for the right Russian/Ukrainian words for “shirt,” “size,” “socks,” “sale price,” and the like, but I did ok, and got between 30% and 50% off on most of the items.)
