Scientology is on trial in France. Whatever you think of its doctrines, and you can imagine what I think, this is like suing the Roman Catholic Church if a visit to Lourdes doesn’t cause the lame to walk again.
As the BBC reports,
France regards Scientology as a sect, not a religion, and the organisation could be banned if it loses the case.
I recall some years ago in Germany arguing over the banning of Scientology in that country. The (as I recall) Justice Minister of the Federal Republic defended a ban on Scientology because “what they believe is not true.” She was, of course, a practicing member of a well established religion in that country.
It’s unclear to me that the Church of Scientology isn’t actually a criminal organization.
Of course, the same might be said of the Catholic Church.
