It killed itself. May I suggest anyone interested in why the USSR died read Gaidar's excellent <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Collapse-Empire-Lessons-Modern-Russia/dp/0815731140" rel="nofollow">Collapse of an Empire</a>? It's a great book, by a great man. Contrary to the NYT headline, I don’t believe Yegor Gaidar really killed the command economy, nor did he think he did. It killed itself.
