Both liberal and conservative politicians openly & successfully work for bigger and more centralized govt, and their main point of contention is whether the emphasis should be on a welfare state or a police state…not that these are mutually exclusive.
It is a real issue, and *ought* to be a place where citizens of almost any political persuasion can find common ground — but we tend to be too busy demonizing each other to get around to real issues.
