College Dropout
Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Annimation Studios, June 12, 2005, Stanford University.
Hat tip to Jason Palmer of Schoolnet, who sent me the whole text (which is a lot better than the mere snippets I’d seen quoted here and there).
We Reedies (even up-coming ones) take bittersweet pride in the fact that yes Steve Jobs went there, and yes he subsequently dropped out and credited that decision with his incredible success.
Regardless of that, Brian, I’m still happy to be heading there this fall.
Although I doubt I’ll be dropping out anytime soon. Somehow that doesn’t quite work with what I’d like to be doing. (Kind of need degrees for that.)
(I’m confused why Reed would take pride in Jobs dropping out. Say, that reminds me–You’ve never really answered me outright on this–does Reed just loathe Stanford? You seem to dig into them often enough.)
And out of respect for Mr. Palmer, I will try to make this comment somewhat more relevant. So here goes:
Yes, Steve Jobs is excellent.
I think you misunderstood me. Jobs dropped out of Reed, and then credited *that* decision with his success.
I didn’t mean to insinuate anything negative about Stanford. Sorry if it came across that way.
We’ve spoken about it since. You’re right. My mistake.
I’m glad we’ve disagreed to agree again, and that at least now we’ve learned to do it from a distance!
