A lot of such places lack academic rigor because they aren’t really that interested in the issues, and rarely interested in public charity despite 501(c)(3) status. Many times they’re really cover for left wing anarchism, trafficking, money laundering, public benefits fraud, and the movement of fugitives.
That article is worth remember, which explains why I do! (that five years have passed is a bit scary, though)
