What’s Wrong With this Title? “Hyperinflation forces Zimbabwe to print $200 million notes”

Imagine life like this:

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe had capped maximum daily withdrawals at 500,000 Zimbabwean dollars: about 25 U.S. cents, or about a quarter of Thursday’s price of a loaf of bread.

  1. This headline leaves me speechless (fortunately I still can type).

There’s almost no understanding at all of economics among members of the press, or for that matter politicians, and a fair share of the public, even.

But this particular instance seems unusually, ummm… (OK I’m now typeless). I once heard one of Yuschenko’s advisors pointing out that even the communists in Ukraine and Russia had by now learned what causes hyperinflation. Why is CNN so dense?

    Charles,

Almost all news outlets are clueless. The BBC also has run stories on how hyperinflation has forced the central bank to print 500 billion dollar notes. That’s a bit like saying that the bloody corpse forced the guy with the knife to stab it.
