Penalizing Tires, or People?

by Tom Palmer on September 13, 2009

The Obama administration has, to its shame, imposed senseless taxes on tires made in China. It is not only an assault on honest Chinese workers, but on honest American customers. Dan Ikenson cuts through nonsense in “Burning Rubber: Proposed Duties on Chinese Tires Whiff of Senseless Protectionism.”

Dan also has an excellent analysis of the nature of international trade at FreedomToTrade.org: “No Longer Us versus Them – Trade Policy for the 21st Century” (That’s thanks to the good offices of the International Policy Network.)

(See “US trade board rules against Chinese tire manufacturers” for the bare facts.)

I consider myself a pretty liberal person, but Obama’s policy in this case seems counterintuitive to his message of inclusiveness. It harkens back to the days of the Chinese Exclusions act…
