I just got the latest issue of Stefnir and opened it to find an article about a meeting I hosted with a delegation of Icelanders who were visiting Washington. So, for all those eager to practice your Icelandic: Ã?Â??Ã?Â?Ã? Cato meÃ?Â??Ã?Â?Ã?° Tom Palmer (“At Cato with Tom Palmer”). (Not my best picture, but I was listening very intently.)
Addendum: I’m off to Iceland in August. I’ll have my copies of Jesse Byock’s Viking Age Iceland and Njals Saga.
Tom,
Some pictures of our 2003 trip to iceland are still up at http://www.alangura.com/gallery
I did a little informal travelogue thing for friends and family, with links to specific photos; I’ll try to dig it up for you if i can. Basically we had 5 days to travel around the south/south-eastern edge of the island. We had virtually no time in reykjavik, but what little we had in the city was fun. Once you get out of reykjavik, the place is empty. We were there in the off-season, to be sure (march, still winter), but still.
I was always interested in visiting there, having read some of their literature (Haldor Laxness, and the more recent Llaf Olafson). Amy was on a mission to paint icebergs. So we decided to visit the glacial lagoon at Jokulsarlon and figured out a trip that would take us there. We were both extremely impressed and plan on returning someday, though for much longer. A few weeks or months out in the icelandic countryside would be ideal.
Have fun!
