Thanks to the hard work of my colleagues in the Lamp of Liberty project, essays and articles from a libertarian point of view are now appearing in newspapers in a number of Middle Eastern countries. In the last few days, David Boaz’s essay on rent seeking and the growth of the “parasite economy” appeared in Bahrain (Al Wasat) and in Iraq (Al Mada). More are expected. Our articles appear regularly in Al Ghad in Jordan and my colleagues are working on similar arrangements with international Arabic papers and magazines and with some of the top papers in Egypt and other countries. They are slowly but surely expanding our network. I am very proud to be part of such a team of dedicated friends of freedom. One of the keys is to include timely, topical, and interesting essays. Just as American or German papers rarely run “old classics,” but prefer articles with some contemporary relevance and news hook, Arabic papers are looking to run analysis of topics and issues that are in the news. (That said, we have had success placing excerpts from Adam Smith on international trade, when there is some connection to international trade negotiations or discussions.)
