The aspiring totalitarian Democratic Revolution Party in Mexico, which split off from the weakening authoritarian Institutional Revolutionary Party, is insisting on calling people into the streets to paralyze the country until Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is certified as the winner of the hotly contested presidential election. If there were evidence of fraud, that would be one thing, but for such thugs, losing an election is by itself evidence that they were cheated. After all, “The People, United, Will Never Be Defeated!” And it follows that if you are the people, you can never lose.
Since his party is effectively the party of the bureaucrats, they control Mexico City (the federal district), meaning that they can paralyze the rest of the country. (That says something about the wisdom of the founders of the USA, who located the capital in a geographically rather small area in a swamp.)
I wonder if any of Lopez Obrador’s supporters have noticed that he’s destabilizing the city that HE’S THE MAYOR OF to try to force a court’s hand. This is reminiscent of nothing more than the ’99 Seattle hoodlums putting hundreds of low-wage workers out of work…while protesting globalization for putting low-wage workers out of work.
…Or rather, WAS the mayor of, for 5+ years. The principle still stands, though
It gets better:
“…some newly elected officials of his Democratic Revolution Party may refuse to take office in protest.” (from Yahoo News)
Yes. Let’s protest the evil neoliberals corrupting Mexico by giving them lots of empty positions to fill. That seems well thought-out.
They are trying because that tactic worked splendidly a few months ago, when, after screaming and yelling about respect of democratic procedure, the international community allowed and even encouraged the mob in Haiti to put the current president (Preval) in power without the “deuxieme tour” even though he did not get 50% of the vote. (Same tactits too, bock streets, storm hotels, etc.) Large parts of the international community are in favor of mobocracy not democracy, the mob knows it can count on international support of people who admire Liberation Theology and other forms of fascism. Especially in times when the more serious people of the international community have bigger fish to fry and apparently do not understand the danger in Mexico. But if the Left takes Mexico, we, in the US are in serious trouble. And that is one of the reasons why the mob will get the international Left’s support.
